Cupcakes!

My boss, and good friend, recently had a birthday and what else do you do when one of your favorite people as a birthday? You make cupcakes of course! IMG_4373 I knew I wanted to make flavored cupcakes, but I didn't have a ton of ingredients in the house. Thanks to Pinterest, though, I found a recipe for lemon cupcakes with lemon buttercream frosting. So delicious and scrumptious! IMG_4376 They were definitely a big hit. IMG_4375 I decorated them with some left over pearl-looking sprinkles and edible yellow glitter flakes. It was my first time trying to frost a cupcake in a method other than just dumping frosting on top. I think it turned out pretty well! I used a ziploc bag and just snipped a hole in the corner. Maybe someday I'll pick up a party bag with some basic tips, but until then this works just fine!

I made popovers, woah.

So, if you guys happen to remember, I went on a giant cooking spree way back when I first started this blog (in it's current form) in 2010). You see, I had recently moved to Arkansas to be with my then-boyfriend, but soon-to-be-husband and what else is there to do in Arkansas? Nothing, that's what. And so began my great cooking journey where I tried to teach myself how to cook and bake (turns I enjoy the latter more than the former) by meticulously making the recipes in Joy of Cooking. I particularly enjoyed making items that are not, generally, home made anymore due to the ease with which they can be purchased (dinner rolls, croissants, chicken stock, etc.). Since going on maternity leave I have been trying to reignite the fire for cooking and baking I used to know and I've been moderately successful. I have recently discovered that Alton Brown's show Good Eats has made it's way to Netflix, which means I can now begin binge watching it to my hearts content. I have a particular love for Good Eats because it's basically the Bill Nye of cooking shows and makes me think of how my grandfather would teach cooking and baking if that was ever his forte. Now with that huge amount of back story completed, on to the popovers! The other day I was watching Good Eats while getting some housework done before friends came over for early Christmas. This particular episode focused on, you guessed it, popovers! Now, I'm going to be honest, I know what shape a popover is but I don't recall ever actually eating one. They also seem incredibly intimidating because of aforementioned shape. How does that even happen?! But Alton (because let's be real, I'm on a first name basis, clearly) made it seem incredibly simple so I decided to jump in and give it a whirl.

IMG_0616.JPG TA-DA!! I did it! Success! These were later served with delicious Blue Bell vanilla ice cream (my fav) and fresh sliced strawberries. Yum yum yum.
