Jewelry making…

I love doing pretty much all things crafty, but if there's one area I don't feel like I'm very skilled it's jewelry making. That is, until Pinterest came into my life. I've started trying to use the ideas and pictures of interesting jewelry I've seen on Pinterest to inspire my jewelry making and I think this one turned out pretty cute. IMG_3935 This earring and necklace set is something I made as a Christmas gift for a friend this year. =) I got the idea from a pin I foundĀ . I varied mine a little bit from the original because I didn't add the gold bead inserts between the turquoise pieces. I paired it up with some simple-to-make chain and arrow earrings. Pretty nifty, huh?

Etsy Shop: I finally pulled out the DSLR!

IMG_3885   Huzzah! I finally busted out the DSLR camera my mother gave us for our baby shower and started trying to really play with it. I took it on a test run by trying to take pictures of my latest felt food play set that I made for Etsy. I got the idea because my baby niece (is she still a baby if she turns five in two weeks?) used to LOVE playing with her tea set. The whole family got to enjoy cup after cup of pretend tea from her cute little face as she gleefully ran over and asked us if we wanted another cup.   IMG_3881   The set contains four tea bags with different colored tabs attached to the tea sachets by embroidery thread. Each one is filled with loose pieces of tea leaves in varying shades of green and brown that are secured to the felt bag by a piece of cream tulle to add detailing to the tea bags. IMG_3875 The macarons are made by gathering circle of felt together, stuffing it with fiberfill to get that proper puffy macaron shape and sewing it to another circle of felt. Do this twice and you have your sandwich cookie. The filling is made by attaching each side of the cookie to a piece of white felt, trimming to size and sewing the white felt circles together with a whip stitch. I finished the edges of the cookies by trimming them with a pair of pinking shears for a nice and crinkly edge.   IMG_3865   As always, the felt food sets are handstitched with cotton embroidery thread and crafted from eco-felt, an environmentally friendly felt made from post-consumer water bottles/plastic waste. Felt Food!!

Seriously. It is now my greatest obsession to make as realistic as possible food out of felt. Does that make me weird? Or is it more that I have now fully descended into mom-land? Either way, its pretty fun and I think the fruits of my labors have been more than worth it.

I started by trying to tackle breakfast food, after all, it's my favorite meal of the day so clearly I would have fun making it, right? IMG_0592.JPG

Then I decided to try for something a bit healthier and with a bit more pieces involved. Whole wheat pitas with all the fixings and veggie chips complete with their own bag! And lastly I've started working on a new set that I'm pretty ridiculously excited about. I think it'll be ridiculously cute when I finally have it finished! IMG_0608.JPG This one isn't made strictly from felt as I incorporated tulle to help me make the mesh portion of the tea bag. I think it gives it extra charm. There's going to be more pieces to this set, but I have to finish them and then stage them in an appropriately hipster-y way for photos. Keep your eyes peeled for when I list this guy =) Things have been going fairly well in my etsy shop thus far, and I definitely still adore making cute baby goodies. =) Check it out: http://www.etsy.com/shops/atomicbaby Both of the completed sets retail at $25.

Crunchy momma-to-be

Spent this morning before work making cloth wipes (because if you're going to cloth diaper you might as well use cloth wipes too!) They're pretty simple to make, plain terry cloth on one side and flannel on the other. I happened to have some cute little girl printed flannel available so obviously had to use that. Only six weeks and a bit to go! Can't wait to meet our baby girl!

Digging on my cosplay

I only managed to snag one selfie from the weekend at dragoncon, I seriously need to get better about taking pictures. My mom gave us her old dslr camera for us to photograph baby, so hopefully that will be the inspiration to get me to start taking more pics! That being said, I was so pleased with how my Daenerys Stormborn cosplay turned out!

Future stormpooper!!!

Ahh progress! Feeling accomplished today! I finished the apron that is the main piece of my 1950s stormtrooper housewife outfit. I'll definitely post more pics of the finished outfit once I have it all together! In other news, my unborn is trying to make me blind. I now have an astigmatism in BOTH eyes (where before it was only one) and the original eye has gotten substantially worse. Now I'm trying to get used to feeling of the thicker and larger contacts my poor blind self requires. Wah wah.

Dragoncon is a-coming!!

So I'm finally making real progress on my cosplayed for dragon con this year! Talk about procrastination, less than two weeks to the con and I have exactly zero full cosplays completed. The scheduled lineup is: Day one: vintage 50's housewife stormtrooper? This May end up on another day, my awesome mama is going as a coordinating Darth Vader. Day two: Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. I'll be wearing her wedding dress/funeral pyre dress. I figure this will be pretty maternity friendly. I have the dress essentially completed, the pin ordered and on its way, and all I need to finish are the arm bands and making a dragons egg. My mom and dad are also coordinating with grandma and grandpa Dany and Drogo cosplays. Yay! Day three: Melisandre from Game of Thrones. We're going for her "pregnant-with-a-demon-baby" look. Red dress, belt, necklace and cloak. So far I'm finished with the cloak and dress (pics to come?) and need to make the necklace and belt. Day four: an unknown cosplay. Or maybe just a nerd outfit. Or maybe a disney princess fifties housewife. Who knows! I'm trying to finish the ones I'm certain of before I tackle this day. My mom is also being awesome and supplying wigs for the two full on cosplays that I'll hopefully be adept enough to style when I get there.

Progress!

So I finished all the bits for the changing pad/travel wipes bag. I think it turned out pretty great! The apple/striped one is for Brian and I. The changing pad is double sided with the same fabric used for the inside/outside of the travel wipes bag. The elastic closure is a loop that comes on/off fairly easily so it will be awesome and compact for travel.

20140506-192759.jpg I also finished a set for our friends who are having their baby shower in a couple of weeks! The soon-to-be daddy loves baseball and especially the Yankees so I tried to make his set in Yankee colors. I'm also making her a set (she's a hairdresser!) pics to come!
